Why should I have an ultrasound if I’m considering abortion?
If you’re thinking about taking the abortion pill or scheduling an abortion, getting a free and confidential limited obstetric ultrasound is an important first step. An ultrasound can confirm whether you have a viable pregnancy and determine how far along you are, which directly affects what types of abortion procedures you may be eligible for.
While we do not provide abortion services or the abortion pill, we can confirm your pregnancy and explain how different abortion methods work based on gestational age so you can make an informed decision.
An ultrasound exam can help you:
- Determine if the pregnancy is viable. About 10–20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, and the actual number may be higher because many miscarriages occur very early. 1
- Confirm the pregnancy is not ectopic. An ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening and cannot be treated with abortion pills. 2
- Find out how far along you are, 3 which determines which abortion procedures you may qualify for.
Because our services are free, we do not profit from your decision. This allows us to provide information and support without pressure or judgment. Let us provide the answers you need to make the choice that’s right for you.
AT-HOME ABORTION PILL
Before Taking The Abortion Pill
Prior to taking the abortion pills, it is vital that you see a medical provider, in person, during a private appointment. A medical provider can prevent or diagnose complications before taking the abortion pill. 4,5
Medication abortion (also called the abortion pill) is FDA approved for up to 70 days (10 weeks pregnant) 6 after the start of your last menstrual period.
- The “pill” is actually a protocol that involves taking two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, which are taken in two separate doses on different days(4).
- The abortion pills are different from emergency contraception, sometimes called the “morning-after pill”.
MEDICAL ABORTION MAY NOT BE AN OPTION FOR YOU 7
- Are too far along in your pregnancy. You shouldn’t attempt a medical abortion if you’ve been pregnant for more than 10 weeks. A pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last menstrual period (6,7).
- Have an intrauterine device (IUD) currently in place.6
- Suspect you have a pregnancy outside of the uterus. This is called ectopic pregnancy(2).
- Have certain medical conditions. These include bleeding disorders; certain heart or blood vessel diseases; severe liver, kidney or lung disease; or an uncontrolled seizure disorder(7).
- Take a blood thinner or certain steroid medicines(7).
- Can’t make follow-up visits to your provider or don’t have access to emergency care(7).
- Have an allergy to the medicine used(7).
